Use sugar in moderation. Studies have shown that the average American consumes more than 140 pounds of sugar per year. That's not moderation!

Watch your foods and beverages for hidden sugars. For example:sodacan.jpg (5496 bytes)

Cola drink, 12 ounces 10 teaspoons

Ginger ale, 12 ounces 12 teaspoons

Fruit pie, 1 slice 12 teaspoons

Glazed donut, 6 teaspoons

Also, watch labels for other names for sugar: donut.jpg (8247 bytes)

  • Corn syrup

  • Dextrin

  • Dextrose

  • Fructose

  • Galactose

  • Glucose

Label Note: four grams = 1 teaspoon of sugar

Why is too much sugar bad for us?

  • Causes rapid changes in blood sugar which can restrict fat release.

  • Sugar can stimulate binges.

  • Sugar is nearly void of nutrients.

  • It can lessen your intake of healthier whole foods.

If your 'sweet tooth' is bothering you -- try a piece of whole fruit. Your body will love you for it!
